The main set was worked out in 3D while matching the basement windows from the location survey. On a modest feature like this I also generated the construction drawings.
The basement stairs and top landing were also designed to match the location for any continuity transitions.
Many of the details that went into this set were worked out beforehand in the model. Besides actual construction elements this even included plaster, lighting and set decoration elements.
Rough sawn lumber, and crumbling plaster lent authenticity to the finished set.
One of the hero props was this six page set of time machine blueprints. These drawings were also used to create the glass chip sets for the device.
Here's the assembled version of the backpack time machine.
The scripted music festival meant creating key scenery pieces for an exterior field. A geo-located model allowed for light studies over the course of the shoot schedule. This was key to placing set pieces in order to take advantage of daylight.
It was important to be strategic about the event scenery in order to maximize the use of background extras.
This concept illustration for a fountain / cooling station was first created as a 3D model.
The set piece was both a fun festival attraction and practical as it served to cool off extras (and crew) over the course of hot filming days.
